Foliage characteristics:
Simple, alternate, elliptic to obovate leaves with serrate margins and pointed tips. Slightly downy on underside of leaf. 1.5-3" long.

Bark characteristics:
Red-brown, mottled bark. Twigs can be hairy.

Bloom characteristics:
Solitary, cup-shaped, white flowers with yellow anthers and an occasional red spot on the outer surface of petals. 2" diameter.
Description:
Sawtooth stewartia is similar to the Japanese stewartia, but it has serrated leaves and its white flowers frequently have a red tint on the outer petals.
